- My ISP has Nokia V.34 modems with the AT&T chipset (which they say are
- high quality and cost over US$1000 each), and most of we users have
- the same problem when connecting at 28.8 and with V.42bis compression.
-
- This problems occurs with virtualy every modem with the Rockwell
- chipset and even with US Robotics -- Sportsters V.34+ and Couriers
- V.everything. It seems that only a few Sportsters which haven't been
- upgraded to V.34+/33.6kbps and Multi-Techs (AT&T chipset) haven't
- experienced this problem.
-
- We seem to have isolated the problem to the V.42bis implementation of
- the Nokia modems, so disabling V.42bis compression and using only the
- LAPM error correction, or using instead MNP-2/4 error correction and
- MNP-5 compression has rsolved our problem.
-
- Meanwhile, our ISP has announced to have started talks with Nokia to
- see if they can solve this incompaibility in their V.42bis
- implementation.
-
- If this is the same problem as yours, my advise to you is:
-
- 1 - Turn to MNP error correction and comprression, or
- 2 - Just disable V.42bis data compression, or
- 3 - Limit your modem speed to 26.4, 24.0 or whatever suits you, as
- this problem only seems to happen at the highest speeds, mostly 28.8.
-
- The only *true* solution, however, seems to be your ISP upgrading the
- ROMs of their AT&Ts to a version that doesn't show this V.42bis
- incompatibility, as we have been pressing our ISP to do with their
- Nokias.
-
- Hope this helps...
