  27. My ISP has Nokia V.34 modems with the AT&T chipset (which they say are
  28. high quality and cost over US$1000 each), and most of we users have
  29. the same problem when connecting at 28.8 and with V.42bis compression.

  31. This problems occurs with virtualy every modem with the Rockwell
  32. chipset and even with US Robotics -- Sportsters V.34+ and Couriers
  33. V.everything. It seems that only a few Sportsters which haven't been
  34. upgraded to V.34+/33.6kbps and Multi-Techs (AT&T chipset) haven't
  35. experienced this problem.

  37. We seem to have isolated the problem to the V.42bis implementation of
  38. the Nokia modems, so disabling V.42bis compression and using only the
  39. LAPM error correction, or using instead MNP-2/4 error correction and
  40. MNP-5 compression has rsolved our problem.

  42. Meanwhile, our ISP has announced to have started talks with Nokia to
  43. see if they can solve this incompaibility in their V.42bis
  44. implementation.

  46. If this is the same problem as yours, my advise to you is:
  47.  
  48. 1 - Turn to MNP error correction and comprression, or
  49. 2 - Just disable V.42bis data compression, or
  50. 3 - Limit your modem speed to 26.4, 24.0 or whatever suits you, as     
  51. this problem only seems to happen at the highest speeds, mostly 28.8.

  53. The only *true* solution, however, seems to be your ISP upgrading the
  54. ROMs of their AT&Ts to a version that doesn't show this V.42bis
  55. incompatibility, as we have been pressing our ISP to do with their
  56. Nokias.
